ASEANAPOL Secretariat’s Working Visit to the Director General for International Cooperation Bureau of the Korean National Police Agency

On August 26, 2024, in Seoul, South Korea, the ASEANAPOL Secretariat, led by Executive Director David Martinez Vinluan, conducted a significant working visit to the Director General for International Cooperation Bureau of the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA). Accompanying Executive Director Vinluan were Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr. Bakri Zainal Abidin, Director for Police Services, and Police Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Huu Ngoc, Director for Plans and Programmes. The delegation met with Mr. Lee Jun Hyeong, KNPA’s Director General for International Cooperation, along with key officers including Mr. Jeong Beomseok, Deputy Director for International Investigative Assistance Division; Mr. Lee SeungHo, Coordinator and Translator; and Ms. Park SeeYoung, Contact Person.
This working visit was a sideline meeting to the 2024 International Symposium on Cybercrime Response (ISCR 2024), held at the Fairmont Ambassador in Seoul, Republic of Korea, from Tuesday, August 27, to Thursday, August 29, 2024.
During the meeting, Executive Director Vinluan provided an in-depth overview of the ASEANAPOL Secretariat’s mission and ongoing initiatives. He emphasized the Secretariat’s critical role in enhancing cooperation among ASEAN police forces, facilitating intelligence sharing, and coordinating joint efforts to combat transnational crimes such as human trafficking, cybercrime, drug smuggling, and terrorism across the region and beyond. Vinluan stressed the importance of effective collaboration between ASEAN member countries and Korea in addressing these escalating threats. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that ASEANAPOL continues to serve as a robust foundation for regional law enforcement cooperation through ongoing dialogues and strategic consultations with the KNPA.
Key topics discussed during the meeting included cooperation on countering transnational crime with ASEANAPOL Member Countries, strengthening Korea-ASEAN police cooperation, ASEAN police capacity-building projects, and support of KNPA’s activities.
Both parties engaged in a constructive dialogue, exploring potential areas for closer collaboration between the ASEANAPOL Secretariat and KNPA. The meeting concluded on a highly positive note, with a mutual understanding that strengthening partnerships among law enforcement bodies and international organizations is crucial for addressing the complex challenges of modern transnational crime. Both sides expressed optimism for future joint endeavors and reaffirmed their shared commitment to regional security and stability.
