On May 7, 2024, the TRIPOD II Round Table Meeting, organized by Freeland in partnership with ASEANAPOL, took place in Ha Tinh, Vietnam. Mr. Steve Galster, Chairperson of Freeland, along with David Martinez Vinluan, Executive Director of the ASEANAPOL Secretariat, and Sr. Lt. Colonel Nguyen Huu Ngoc, Director for Plans and Programmes, moderated the roundtable discussions. The gathering convened approximately 30 front-line agencies from Vietnam, including the Ministry of Public Security Police Departments, Department of Defence Border Guards, Prosecution Departments, Customs, and Anti-Money Laundering authorities, among others, to address cross-border wildlife trafficking along the Vietnam and Laos borders. Discussions primarily focused on identifying challenges, exploring collaboration opportunities, and devising strategies to combat wildlife trafficking. Insights shared by the participating agencies contributed to the formulation of capacity-building programs and the planning of future CTOC (Counter Transnational Organized Crime) and Special Investigation Group meetings. As part of the event, Vietnamese participants visited the Cau Treo Border Pass, which serves as a common entry and exit point for individuals and goods between Vietnam and Laos. David Martinez Vinluan, Executive Director of ASEANAPOL, emphasized the urgency of taking decisive action against transnational organized crime in the region. He underscored the significance of collective efforts in ensuring a safer future for all stakeholders involved.
