Visit by Regional Support Office-The Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Person and Related Transnational Crime on 21 February 2018 to ASEANAPOL Secretariat, Kuala Lumpur On 21 February 2018, the Secretariat received a visit by Graeme Jewell, Programme Coordinator and Victoria Miller, Project Officer at the Regional Support Office of The Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Person and Related Transnational Crime. They were warmly welcomed by the Executive Director (ED) of ASEANAPOL Secretariat, Police Colonel Kenechanh Phommachack, Director for Police Services (DPS), Superintendent Jim Wee and Director for Plans and Programmes (DPP), ACP Aidah Othman and officers.
On his welcoming notes, ED explains how the ASEANAPOL works in combating transnational crimes. ASEANAPOL is a platform for its Member Countries to share information, intelligence, and expertise and to develop capacity building. The DPS then further share his view on
e-ADS 2.0 system and how it is been utilized by Member Countries and explain the future plan on upgrading the information data system.
Mr. Jewell presented on the Bali Process, which has 48 Members States and Organizations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ( UNHCR ) , the International Organization for Migration ( IOM ) and the United Nations Office of Drug and Crime ( UNODC ), as well as a number of observer countries and international agencies. Areas of focus for the Bali Process are trafficking in Persons, People Smuggling, Border & Migration Management and Refugee Protection. Based in Bangkok, the Regional Support Office is a central point to provide support for Bali Process activities, including joint projects, capacity building and exchange of best practices, pooling of common technical resources and information sharing. Mr. Jewell and Ms. Miller are currently leading a Regional Support Office project, funded by the Government of Canada, to enhance cross-border information sharing among Bali Process members.
The meeting has created a path to further enhance cooperation, collaboration and sharing views on improving information networking in the future for the mutual interest.
